A disease that has the potential to devastate cattle herds has been discovered in feral pigs. The US Department of Agriculture says a feral pig recently killed in Eddy County has tested positive for pseudo-rabies. The virus lives mostly in water and feed and can kill cattle, dogs and cats with a couple of days of infection. It usually does not harm the feral pigs. The virus can also live in the air for a period of time and cattle that share rangeland with feral pigs are at risk of infection. USDA officials are also warning about another feral hog disease, swine brucellosis, that is on the rise and has the potential to spread to humans. Officials estimate that there are as many as a thousand feral pigs living in the areas outside Roswell and in Chaves county. Most have been brought in by unscrupulous people for hunting purposes. Ranchers are urged to call the USDA if they know there are feral hogs in their area. The USDA can be reached at 505-346-26-40.

Drunk drivers are not only on the street at night. And the New Mexico state police is going to go after drunks who drive during the daytime. A recent arrest for drunk driving that had the driver test at zero point 1-9 at 730 in the morning has prompted state police to increase their daytime DUI patrols. Now officers will be watching for drunks behind the wheel 24 hours a day instead of concentrating their efforts at night.
The New Mexico emergency preparedness manager is suggesting to people that they put together an emergency kit. Homeland security and emergency preparedness secretary John Wheeler says that the state wants everyone to be ready for emergencies and hazards. Officials are recommending that people have enough water, food and supplies on hand to cover at least three days. They also recommend flashlights with extra batteries, a battery powered radio, a first aid kit and extra cell phone batteries. Be sure to also make any special provisions for infants, small children and pets. Make an emergency plan for evacuation including the location to meet if family members are separated. And officials say that you may not be able to access your bank account and important papers, so keep copies of those papers and extra cash in the kit also.
The United States Air Force is proposing a low altitude training area in New Mexico. The Air Force is seeking public comments about its intent to do an environmental assessment to evaluate potential environmental consequences of the training areas. The training area would provide airspace for training operations in the C-130 and CV-22 aircraft. Aircraft participating in the training missions would be flying anywhere between 200 and 3000 feet off the ground and most of the flights would be after dark and on weekends. The airspace would be used by the Air Force Special Operation Forces out of Cannon Air Force Base.
A New Mexico man is planning on fighting a ticket he received from the New Mexico state police. Joel Hall of Albuquerque was stopped by a state police officer who gave him a ticket for littering. And what was he throwing out of his open top Jeep? Sunflower seed hulls. Yep. Sunflower seed hulls. The video from the police car dashcam shows Hall throwing a sunflower seed hull out of his Jeep at the rate of one every half mile. State police officer Ben Arnold told Hall that he did not care if the hulls were biodegradable and he even suggested that Hall get a trashcan for his sunflower seeds. Hall told an Albuquerque TV station in an interview that the officer was irritated and made him feel like he had dumped his whole garbage can out the window. Hall says the ticket is ridiculous and that he plans to fight it. Hall is facing a 300 dollar fine and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Hall also says that will continue throwing his sunflower hulls out the window.
